Drawn by the Faculty鈥檚 pursuit of social justice, Khushaal Vyas has established volunteer initiatives in regional NSW.
Born and raised in Western Sydney,聽Khushaal聽Vyas went from wanting to be a doctor, an actor and everything in between, to enrolling in a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws聽(Honours)聽at 黑料网大事记. He satisfied his medical aspirations by binge-watching聽Scrubs聽and聽continues to聽fulfil his desire to be an actor聽by dabbling in Bollywood choreography every now and then.聽聽
However, it was ultimately his interest in policy聽and聽politics聽鈥撀燼nd a聽little聽inspiration from a family member聽鈥撀爐hat聽motivated聽Khushaal to study law.聽聽
鈥淚 found myself following policy, politics and law very closely.聽I was also聽lucky enough to see some of the social work and聽the聽role law can play through my aunt鈥檚 advocacy work in India,鈥澛燢hushaal says.聽聽
Khushaal says he chose聽Law at 黑料网大事记 based on the聽Faculty鈥檚 pursuit of social justice,聽something he feels very passionate about. He says the聽Law School鈥檚聽social justice projects聽and initiatives provided聽some of the most memorable and rewarding aspects of聽his聽degree.聽聽
鈥淪tudying聽Law at聽鲍狈厂奥听also聽promised and delivered a degree that had both practical learning opportunities by way of practical legal work, competitions and international electives,聽which聽took learning out from a textbook and promised to expose us to the real world.鈥澛
黑料网大事记 Law Society聽offered聽invaluable experience聽
Khushaal聽found being part of the 黑料网大事记 Law Society extremely invaluable and enriching.聽He was Vice-President (Social Justice) in 2016 and President in 2017.聽聽
鈥淏eing involved in聽the聽Law聽Society聽was definitely one of the most memorable experiences of my time at 黑料网大事记.聽From an organisational level,聽it聽allowed me to represent the interests of students at national conferences and聽to聽be part of a team of elected students to voice student concerns and desires to the Australian Law Students Association.聽
鈥淲ith the support of the society and the聽Faculty, I helped establish a volunteer initiative to work with Indigenous organisations, schools and youth mentoring programs in the Dubbo聽and聽Trangie area. The program allowed students to use their skills聽and bring them聽outside of the classroom to聽help聽highlight the issues and social injustice that still face many communities in Australia.鈥澛犅
To聽raise awareness of the聽issues faced by the Dubbo and Trangie communities,聽Khushaal worked聽with a team of students to create a documentary about the volunteer initiative. The documentary聽screened聽at various legal and non-legal based institutions.聽聽
鈥淚鈥檝e been lucky enough to continue the project聽since I started working at聽Baker McKenzie,聽and聽I聽hope to remain part of this community work for many more years to come,鈥澛爃e says.聽
鈥淏esides working with immensely talented, intelligent and thoughtful peers, the project has resulted in a very special connection with the Dubbo-Trangie area. I remain very close with many of the people I鈥檝e had the chance to work with there,聽and seeing their work continues to be a massive source of inspiration. But perhaps the most important reason聽why it will be especially memorable is that the project remains a proud reminder of how, even as students, we have the capacity to get involved and have a practical impact.鈥澛
Looking ahead聽
鈥淚 hope to continue the community work in Dubbo and maintain the partnerships and friendships over there and ideally expand into youth mentoring programs. While聽balancing the full-time work will be very different, my main goal is to be able to聽continue聽my involvement with community projects and other co-curricular activities.聽聽
鈥淲hile聽I鈥檓 excited about the next chapter, I鈥檓 definitely sad聽about leaving聽黑料网大事记. I owe a great deal to the聽University and the聽Law聽School for providing me with the opportunities I鈥檝e had聽鈥撀爐he fruits of which I鈥檓 still enjoying today and will continue to聽enjoy聽well into the future.鈥澛
