This July our work as Secretariat to the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership (GOAP) has been officially endorsed as an Ocean Decade project.

GOAP is a global, multistakeholder initiative established to enable countries and other entities to measure and manage progress toward ocean sustainable development.

Ocean accounts were one of six new initiatives endorsed as a key initiative in the Programme on Sustainable Ocean Planning. The projects selected 鈥empower nations by providing the necessary tools and knowledge to develop and implement tailored, evidence-driven strategies for sustainable ocean use鈥. Becoming a Decade Project is a significant endorsement of how essential ocean accounts are to realising a sustainable ocean future that supports communities, nature and a liveable climate.听

It adds to the recognition of ocean accounts adopted in the final in June 鈥 being the first time ocean accounting has been referenced in a UN Declaration. All 193 UN Member States agreed on "the critical need for national ocean accounting" as essential infrastructure to accelerate ocean conservation and sustainable ocean management. 听

This is recognition of the vision for ocean accounts to be central in realising a healthy future for ocean, people, and planet.

These endorsements confirm that GOAP is moving from ambition to action鈥攚here measuring, valuing, and managing the ocean through integrated data becomes the global standard. This progress is reflected in GOAP having now upward of 44 member organisations from 23 countries, with 33 countries undertaking ocean accounting initiatives underway.

What is the Ocean Decade?

Proclaimed in 2017 by the United Nations General Assembly, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) or the Ocean Decade aims to stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyse new opportunities for sustainable development of this massive marine ecosystem.听

The vision of the Ocean Decade is 鈥榯he science we need for the ocean we want鈥.听

The Ocean Decade provides a framework for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to achieve a better understanding of the ocean system, and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda.

Ocean Decade Challenges

The Secretariates work on GOAP was identified as being particularly aligned with three of the ten challenges that are part of the Ocean Decade.

  • Challenge 4: Sustainable Ocean Economy
  • Challenge 7: Ocean Observations.
  • Challenge 9: Capacity Building.
