Tell us a bit about yourself!
I am an endocrinologist in private practice at St Vincent's Clinic and Randwick. I am a Senior Research Associate in the Medicines Intelligence Research Program, School of Population Health, ºÚÁÏÍø´óʼÇ. I was awarded my PhD this year, which was about quality use of SGLT2 inhibitors in type 2 diabetes.
What’s your research all about, and what’s the most exciting part for you?
There are two major medicine classes with cardiorenal and metabolic benefits in type 2 diabetes and obesity - SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists. My colleagues and I study real-world population use of these medicines in NSW and Australia using large, linked databases. The most exciting parts of research for me are being able to develop research questions through my clinical work, and then for our research to inform clinical practice. Our findings are relevant to consumers, clinicians and policymakers and I enjoy the translational aspects of research - to try to improve health at a population level.
Is there a recent achievement that you’d like to share?
This year I was one of the leads on a Consumer workshop for our Cardiometabolic program in the Medicines Intelligence Research Program. It was a very successful workshop where we had 10 consumers with lived experience of diabetes, obesity, heart and/or kidney disease.
As an ECR, what’s been one of your biggest challenges, and how did you tackle it?
There are several challenges as an ECR. It is sometimes tricky balancing clinical and research work, but I enjoy both and clinical work supports my research work and vice versa. I am also a mother to two relatively young daughters which is another balancing act. One can only try one's best in life and there is no perfection.
What activities keep you inspired and energised?
Being with my two daughters and husband, being out in nature, reading and watching movies.
