Any person can nominate a species for listing as threatened, that is, vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered, with extinction. Once listed as threatened, the species will be eligible for additional support and protection under Australia legislation. The TRE team are active contributors to listings, both on an ad hoc basis and as part of strategic projects.Â
Following the Black Summer Bushfires the TRE team lead the assessment of 260 priority plant species impacted by the fires. This resulted in 110 species nominated for listings under the Commonwealth Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. The team is involved in ongoing efforts to achieve comprehensive plant listings under state (NSW) and federal legislation, as well as research into the effectiveness of plant conservation policies and interventions.Â
The IUCN Australia Plant Species Specialist group, which contributes to nominating species, as well as reviewing protection and conservation activities recommended for threatened plants species, is led out of TRE by Tom.Â
These projects involve collaboration with the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, the Australian Network for Plant Conservation and the IUCN Australia Plant Species Specialist Group.
