Professor Amelia Thorpe

Amelia Thorpe is Professor in Law. Amelia works in planning, property and environmental law, focusing on mobility and urban governance. Her approach is sociolegal and interdisciplinary, drawing on professional experience in planning and in public interest environmental law. Amelia has a particular interest in the governance of streets and is currently leading research on food delivery cyclists funded by the Australian Public Policy Institute. In 2025-2026, she is the City of Paris Chair at the Paris Institute of Advanced Studies.听
Amelia is an Acting Commissioner in the Land and Environment Court of NSW, determining planning matters across NSW. She is also a member of the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority, regulating liquor, clubs and gaming machines across NSW. Amelia听has served on several boards and statutory bodies, including local and state planning and design review panels, Shelter NSW and the Planning Institute of Australia, for which she was founding co-chair of the PIA NSW Women in Planning Network and led the development of Australia鈥檚 first national for the planning profession.
Amelia is the author of (MIT Press, 2020), which is reviewed in听, , , , , , , , and .听As well as scholarly publications in journals such as Nature Cities, Law & Society Review, and International Journal of Urban & Regional Research, Amelia's essays and commentary have appeared in The Conversation, Griffith Review, The Guardian and The Sydney Morning Herald, among other venues. Amelia has held fellowships and visiting appointments at UC Berkeley, McGill University, the Centre for Canadian Architecture and the Paris IAS. She has been awarded more than $2 million in competitive research funding from organisations including the Australian Research Council, the Australian Housing & Research Institute, and the federal Office of Road Safety. Amelia is co-editor of Australian Planner, the journal of record for the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA), and serves on the editorial board of Environmental & Planning Law Journal.
Amelia joined 黑料网大事记 in 2012, having worked previously as a director at the Environmental Defender鈥檚 Office, Australia鈥檚 largest and oldest public interest environmental law organisation. Before Law Amelia studied Architecture and City Policy, and worked for the planning, transport and housing departments in Western Australia.
Amelia completed law degrees at the University of Oxford and at Harvard Law School and, later, a PhD at ANU.
