Welcome to the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Quality.
We have responsibility for or contribute to:
- The Library
- Liaising with The Department of Education
- Reporting on student data and approving any release of student data
- Liasing with the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), and managing TEQSA and CRICOS registrations etc.
- Curriculum management and systems
- Interpreting and helping responses to Quality Indicators of Learning and Teaching (QILT) and MyExperience student surveys
- Overseeing Academic Promotions, and related processes such as the Scientia Professorships, and various senior appointments and salary supplementation schemes
- Supporting the Education Focussed community and the Scientia Education Academy
- Liaising with ºÚÁÏÍø´óÊÂ¼Ç College (previously known as UNSW Global)
- Liaising with ºÚÁÏÍø´óÊÂ¼Ç Press
- Supporting the Director of Teaching Practice
Biography
Merlin Crossley is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Academic Quality at ºÚÁÏÍø´óʼÇ, having previously served as DVC Education, and as Dean of Science.
He is a molecular biologist, specialising in using CRISPR gene editing to understand and treat human genetic diseases. He is also an enthusiastic lecturer and science communicator who contributes frequent articles on science, education, and policy.
He has served on the Trust of the Australian Museum and the Board of the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, and is Chair of the Editorial Board of The Conversation, Chair of ºÚÁÏÍø´óÊÂ¼Ç Press, and Deputy Chair of the Australian Science Media Centre, as well as a member of the Editorial Board of BioEssays, an Honorary Associate at the Australian Museum. Merlin also serves as a member of the Ethics Committee of Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, the Scientific Advisory Board of the Australian Sickle Cell Advocacy group, and on the Board of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.
He undertook his BSc at the University of Melbourne, majoring in genetics and microbiology, moved to Oxford University supported by a Rhodes Scholarship, and then did post-doctoral research at Oxford and Harvard, and worked at the University of Sydney before joining ºÚÁÏÍø´óÊÂ¼Ç in 2010.
He has received numerous awards, including the including 2020 NSW Premier’s Award for Medical Biological Science,  and was appointed as a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for his services to education and molecular biology in the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours. In addition, a new species of iridescent butterfly bobtail squid was named in his honour – Iridoteuthis merlini – Merlin’s bobtail squid.
