Master of Simulation and Immersive Technologies FAQs

  • Immersive technology, also widely known as extended reality (XR), is an umbrella term for interactive tools and systems that create simulated experiences or imagined environments people can actively engage with. Depending on the equipment used, it can stimulate multiple senses 鈥 such as sight, sound and even touch 鈥 to blur the line between the digital and physical worlds.

Within extended reality, (XR) there are three main variations of immersive technology:

    • Virtual reality (VR)
    • Augmented reality (AR)
    • Mixed reality (MR)

  • Extended Reality (XR) is the overarching category that includes virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), and refers broadly to simulation-based technologies. While AR, VR and MR share some features and technical requirements, each offers distinct experiences:

    • Virtual reality (VR): creates a fully immersive digital environment that completely replaces the real world.

    • Augmented reality (AR): overlays digital elements onto the real-world environment, with limited interaction between the physical and virtual.

    • Mixed reality (MR): blends physical and digital environments into a single, interactive experience, encouraging real-time engagement between both.

  • As immersive technologies advance, extended reality (XR) is creating impact far beyond gaming and entertainment. In education and training, XR enables simulation training and immersive learning experiences that bring online education to life, which is particularly valuable in fields like:

    • Healthcare: surgeons can practise complex procedures in a risk-free virtual environment
    • Engineering: students can explore 3D models of structures and test designs before real-world construction
    • Defence: personnel can rehearse tactical operations in realistic, controlled simulations

XR also transforms industries where enhancing the human experience is key, such as:

    • Commerce: customers can virtually 鈥渢ry on鈥 clothes or preview furniture in their home
    • Education: interactive, 3D lessons make abstract concepts easier to grasp
    • Real estate: buyers can walk through properties remotely with virtual tours
