What is graphic design?

Graphic design uses the skills of typography, image making, colour and design systems to shape information and ideas into compelling visuals that communicate clearly.

Some examples of visual communication include:

  • Developing a logo and visual identity
  • Designing a poster
  • Developing a magazine layout
  • Creating product packaging
  • Designing signage systems

You’ll explore the application of creative thinking to brand identities, innovative packaging, visually striking publications, data visualisation, illustration and rendering, and graphic design in 3D and 4D environments. There is an emphasis on responsible practice, a sustainable approach to materials and a balance of digital and analogue design methods. You’ll develop skills in concept development, making, critical thinking, technology, research and management, leading you to a diverse range of careers. Throughout your studies, you’ll learn how to craft compelling portfolio pieces that highlight your evolving identity as designers.
