Industry Advisory Board

The Industry Advisory Board (IAB) comprises senior industry representatives, who provide high level advice and feedback to the School about curriculum and program design, new courses, industry trends and needs, and the expectation of industry with regards to graduate capabilities. The IAB meets twice per year with the School’s executives and Heads of Disciplines. The following industry representatives are current members of the board:

Biography:

Kerim is a principal power consultant with more than twenty-five years of experience in Australia and on international projects, including site engineer roles.

His engineering experience encompasses transmission and distribution systems, transient stability analysis of large power systems, power quality analysis, renewable generation, mining systems, hydropower, thermal power generation, large pumping stations, and energy storage.

Kerim is also a proficient project and design manager, conversant with authoring concept designs to contractual documents for tendering purpose, contract negotiation with suppliers, supervision of works and contracts, team management, and building successful relationships and engagement with clients.

He is a Fellow member of Engineers Australia and a member of the International Council on Large Electric Systems group C6/C1.33 on multi-energy system interactions in distribution grids.

Biography:

Specialising in internet architecture, Narelle has a broad technical and strategic view of Internet scale ICT delivery and has been a user, builder, operator and researcher of Internet networks through her extensive career with telcos, research agencies and consumer bodies. Narelle also has a leadership and governance background in the not-for-profit sector and held positions on the boards of the global Internet Society and the Public Interest Registry which operates the .Org top-level domain. Narelle has particular interests in  IPv6 adoption, internet security, data centre construction and OSS. Narelle has been CEO of the Internet Association of Australia since 2020, the industry association representing the smaller internet provider.

Proven Systems Engineering Leader & Domain Specialist with 35 years of expertise across Defence Industries, Manufacturing & R&D. Current NV2 & extensive experience in the ASDEFCON contracting framework.

Biography:

I specialise in systems engineering capability development, demonstrated through practical application in projects, development and enabling application through implementation of governance frameworks, processes and training programs, delivery of conference papers & tertiary sector guest lecturing and in leading engineering workforce planning and resource allocation for bids, projects, and products in large Matrix-style organisations.

As a passionate and proactive leader I am committed to driving and building trusted partnerships between industry, the tertiary education sector and Engineers Australia (EA) through frequent participation in EA engagements (assessing Chartered candidates and assessment of accreditation for Engineering Faculties for national and international universities)  and  membership of the Professional Advisory Board for the University of Technology Sydney and the Industry Advisory Board for the University of NSW, (also guest lecturing on Systems Engineering at ºÚÁÏÍø´óʼÇ).

Formalising best practice recruitment with Universities, and elevation of organisational functional capability across multiple engineering domains through my excellent record of recruiting and development of high-performing engineering teams through training, mentoring, ongoing monitoring and assessment of capability for a Systems Engineering discipline team of 160.

Biography:

Julie, founder of Engineering Business Pty Ltd, is an engineer with more than 17 years' experience in the public sector working on Defence projects including major acquisitions and long-term sustainment contracts. In 2016, Julie started her own company Engineering Business Pty Ltd to assist companies to bid and win on government tenders. Over the last eight years she has assisted companies secure multi million-dollar contracts and develop engineering systems and documentation to support the quality of their work. More recently the business expanded to provide dedicated grant support focused on startups, innovation and Women in STEM.

Biography:

Alex Moran is a customer-focused, professional engineering leader over 20 years’ experience in utilities. She has experience across asset and risk management, developing and implementing customer focussed technology innovations, as well as managing large customer facing teams.

Alex has deep knowledge of the Australian regulatory framework across economic regulation, metering & connections. She recently spent two years on the Board of directors for Australia’s peak industry body for clean energy, the Clean Energy Council. 

Alex holds a Bachelor in Electrical Engineering, a Masters in Engineering Asset Management and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors

Biography:

Kuan holds a Ph.D. in experimental physics from the University of New South Wales. He began his career in academia, researching a range of quantum computing platforms and co-authoring over 50 peer-reviewed papers, several of which appeared in the prestigious Nature family of journals. His scientific work has taken him to world-class laboratories across Australia, the United States, and Europe.

Before co-founding IQM Quantum Computers, Kuan also spent time at Intel and Microsoft. As IQM’s co-founder and inaugural Chief Technology Officer, he built the technology organization from the ground up, growing it into a 200-person team of engineers and scientists. Under his leadership, the company reached several major milestones, most notably delivering Finland’s first commercial quantum computer in record time. He also served on IQM’s supervisory board for nearly five years. In recognition of his contributions, the Technology Industries of Finland named him CTO of the Year in 2023.

Asia Pacific Lead, IBM Quantum Innovation Centres

Biography:

Dr. Anna Phan is the Asia Pacific Lead for IBM Quantum Innovation Centres, where she leads strategic engagement and technical enablement for public and academic IBM Quantum Network partners across the region. 

She brings a multidisciplinary background spanning quantum computing, machine learning, and experimental particle physics. As a former researcher at IBM Quantum, she contributed to quantum machine learning advancements and developed educational resources to grow the global quantum workforce. Her academic background includes doctoral and postdoctoral research at CERN with the ATLAS and LHCb experiments.

She is committed to strengthening academia-industry collaboration and advancing research translation and workforce readiness in emerging technologies.

Biography:

Ben is an accomplished engineering and management professional with over 20 years of experience delivering complex projects and building high-performing teams, particularly within the defence sector. Possessing a proven track record in systems engineering across the full lifecycle, with significant expertise in naval communications, Ben excels at translating complex technical challenges into pragmatic solutions.

He currently leads the engineering & technology functions at Rohde & Schwarz Australia, where he is responsible for capability delivery, workforce development, and strategic planning. Prior to this, he successfully managed the delivery of critical projects earning industry recognition.

Ben is adept at stakeholder engagement, risk management, and fostering a collaborative, growth-oriented culture.  A skilled communicator and problem-solver, Ben consistently delivers results while upholding the highest quality standards.

Industrial training

ºÚÁÏÍø´óÊÂ¼Ç Engineering students are required to undertake 60 days of industrial training. This is a great opportunity for employers to engage with potential future employees and to mentor the next generation of engineers.
