A SMaRT vision for a sustainable future
A SMaRT vision for a sustainable future | 10am | Room B
Waste is a resource waiting to be transformed through innovative technologies into sustainable materials for remanufacturing. Complex products at end-of-life, rich in metals, polymers, ceramics, etc. are typically considered too difficult or uneconomical to recycle using conventional methods. However, sustainability demands we move beyond linear systems and unlock the latent value in waste. By reimagining waste as a renewable input for industry, we can drive innovation, generate local jobs, and build resilient, low-carbon economies.
The SMaRT Centre is delivering real-world solutions by integrating recycling and remanufacturing through scientific advances in microrecycling and modular MICROfactories. These systems enable the transformation of diverse waste streams including plastics, textiles, glass, and e-waste into high-performance materials such as Green Ceramics and 100% e-waste plastic filaments.听
A key innovation is the Green Steel Polymer Injection Technology (PIT), which facilitates the release of in-situ hydrogen and solid carbon from waste polymers during steel production, thereby reducing reliance on coke and coal while enhancing furnace efficiency.
Through selective thermal transformation, SMaRT is also synthesising nanomaterials including metal oxides and carbons for applications in energy storage. These breakthroughs offer both environmental and economic value, demonstrating that circular manufacturing can deliver industry-ready outputs from waste inputs.
SMaRT's vision is to embed these technologies into industries globally redefining waste, building green supply chains, and enabling a new era of sustainable production where materials circularity becomes the norm.

    Lunchtime film screening: Noho Whareponga
Noho Wahreponga: M膩ori voices on land, life, ageing and resilience | 12noon | Club Bar
Noho Whareponga is a grassroots documentary that offers to engage with Indigenous knowledge on growing old in connection with the land. Filmed in the remote coastal settlement of Whareponga on the East Coast of Aotearoa New Zealand, this interview-driven documentary emerged from a research collaboration on climate change and brain health co-led by Dr Susanne R枚hr and local kaum膩tua (M膩ori elders).
Featuring five family members from the Whareponga community, the film highlights M膩ori approaches to resilience and community, countering the deficit-based narratives that have long shaped research on Indigenous ageing. A visiting friend from Gisborne, a 2.5-hour drive away, reflects on the contrasts between urban life and the rhythms of the settlement. By foregrounding connections to land, genealogy, kinship and belonging, Noho Whareponga invites audiences to consider culturally grounded and ecologically attuned ways of ageing well - insights that resonate far beyond Whareponga amid global challenges of climate change and health inequity.

Transforming business practices in global supply chains
Transforming business practices in global supply chains | 1pm | Room B
Historically, research and advocacy in business and human rights has predominantly focused on the negative actions of business and not on what business can do right. This research project aims to fill this gap by identifying and testing replicable business practices, empowering stakeholders to advocate for and implement just transitions in global supply chains, and by demonstrating effective human rights and environmental due diligence (HREDD).鈥疶o achieve this, researchers need to identify not only where business is currently falling short, but also provide evidence for how specific responsible business approaches that encapsulate HREDD can create positive impact at the scale required to ensure just transitions.听听

How Can Australia Achieve 50% EV Adoption on Roads by 2035?
The world is grappling with rising environmental challenges, with transportation being one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. In Australia, the transport sector accounts for nearly 19% of total emissions, making it a critical area for decarbonization. To address this, the Australian Government has set an ambitious target of achieving 50% electric vehicle (EV) adoption on the roads by 2035. This project aims to explore how to achieve that goal. Success depends not only on expanding infrastructure and implementing supportive policies but also on understanding the mechanisms that drive individuals to adopt EVs and how these mechanisms can be applied to influence non-EV owners.
Data were collected from EV owners across different states of Australia to analyse their pre-purchase expectations. This project investigates how social influence shapes EV owners鈥 expectations related to various EV attributes before purchase and how these expectations translate into adoption decisions. Rather than focusing solely on improving EV policies, the study examines what potential users expect from policymakers, manufacturers, and governments. It specifically explores the role of social networks through family, friends, peers, media, and opinion leaders in shaping perceptions of key EV attributes such as performance, cost, convenience, and sustainability.

Switching the world's salt supply for cardiovascular prevention
Australians are consuming too much salt, raising blood pressure (leading to hypertension) and increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Potassium-enriched salt looks, tastes, and cooks just like regular salt, but it helps lower blood pressure and protect heart health.
Research by The George Institute for Global Health shows that potassium-enriched salt is a practical, scalable way to reduce blood pressure, lower the risk of strokes and heart attacks, and contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3.4.1, which tracks premature mortality from non-communicable diseases.
Unlike regular salt, which is 100% sodium chloride, potassium-enriched salt replaces some harmful sodium with heart-friendly potassium chloride, delivering the same flavour with added health benefits.

Integrating education and psychological back pain treatment in primary care
Chronic back pain (pain lasting over 3 months) is the leading cause of long-term disability globally and often associated with psychological concerns.
General practice is often the first point of care for back pain, where patients should expect access to evidence-based care that could include education and psychological interventions. These interventions can help reduce pain, improve function, and ease suffering. Unfortunately, many people leave the general practitioners (GP鈥檚) office without clear evidence-based care, and even when effective options are offered, access is limited by geographic barriers and shortage of health professionals, 28% of Australians live in rural or remote areas.
To tackle this problem, we fostered collaboration between industry and academia. Our research team is conducting an effectiveness-implementation trial in general practices, where patients with back pain are randomly allocated to receive either education via a fact sheet or education combined with evidence-based clinical hypnosis via a mobile app, seamlessly delivered after the consultation. In 2024, we conducted a feasibility study with 60 participants and in 2025 we commenced a large-scale clinical trial, which has recruited 100 participants (15% of the proposed sample size). We aim to identify a cost-effective treatment for back pain and the practical strategies required for real-world implementation, showing that adequate care can be effectively delivered in general practice.

    BioShelter
A team of computational designers from the School of Built Environment at 黑料网大事记 Arts, Design & Architecture has developed innovative 3D-printed reef structures 鈥 called BioShelters 鈥 to help reestablish oyster populations around Sydney Harbour.
The project, supported by Landcom and NSW Government funding, applies advanced computational methods architects use to design and fabricate green coastal infrastructure.
Each BioShelter is made from a 3D-printed recycled plastic mould and filled with a concrete mix that includes crushed oyster shells. They are approximately six metres by two metres and 90 centimetres in height and segmented into 25 individual panels. The BioShelters have recently been installed at the new Sydney Fish Market site in Glebe, an area where natural habitats have been lost due to urban development.
In places like Sydney, more than 50 per cent of the harbour shoreline has been modified with built structures, such as seawalls, to protect coastal infrastructure. However, these structures are typically flat and lack the features and crevices of a natural rocky shoreline needed to support native biodiversity.

Fighting Corporate Greenwashing: AI-Powered Truth in Sustainability
This research addresses critical market failures in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosure systems through a rigorous econometric framework utilizing comprehensive data from 55,000+ firms. We develop a novel Materiality Alignment Score (MAS) to quantify systematic greenwashing behaviours, providing regulators with quantitative thresholds for risk-based supervision and automated screening protocols.
The methodology enables evidence-based policy interventions across multiple domains: securities commissions can implement enhanced scrutiny mechanisms for firms exhibiting disclosure-performance misalignments; international standard-setting bodies receive empirical foundations for differentiated, sector-specific disclosure requirements; and central banks gain robust tools for climate stress-testing protocols. The framework supports mandatory ESG rating agency oversight while strengthening fiduciary duty frameworks for institutional investors.
Direct SDG contributions include advancing SDG 12 through evidence-based sustainable procurement policies and SDG 13 via enhanced climate-related financial disclosure verification. The research facilitates cross-border regulatory cooperation, preventing regulatory arbitrage while accelerating genuine sustainable finance initiatives. This framework ultimately strengthens market integrity in the transition toward sustainable economic systems through actionable policy intelligence.
