This project investigates recent innovations in the policy, funding, delivery and regulatory environment for the provision of affordable housing across Australian jurisdictions. The focus of the research is on the operating environment of not for profit organisations that are undertaking the financing and development of affordable housing. By comparing evidence across states and territories, the research aims to discern what has been effective policy and practice, and to make a case for strategies that would be capable of supporting larger scale growth in this emerging industry in Australia. The project also includes an assessment of comparable but better established not for profit housing models in selected European countries, which may offer good ideas and lessons for local policy making. The research team is led by Vivienne Milligan and includes researchers at the Universities of Queensland, Western Sydney and Sydney.
