This project developed a walkability index, WalkTHERE (Walking Travel from Home to Everywhere Required Everyday) designed to shed light on the potential for walking as a mode of transport. The THERE index design can also be used for other modes of transport, with further research underway on how to use such indices to compare the benefits of different transport investment priorities for access to destinations.

Sustainable mobility is a key goal for cities in Australia and worldwide, but without quantification it is difficult to evaluate the effects of improvements to walking and public transport infrastructure. Reductions in travel time are not the only way to measure such effects; instead WalkTHERE measures access by walking to more destinations.

Results are demonstrated here for Sydney.

The index can be deployed anywhere in the world using open data, and the code to calculate it is available as an open-source Python package.听
