Displaced migrant women in Australia face survival-driven challenges, emotional hardship, and systemic barriers. JEINA aims to address their unique educational and wellbeing needs.
Migrant women, particularly those who have been forcibly displaced, face significant challenges in Australia. These challenges often compel them to prioritise immediate survival over long-term aspirations. Barriers to education, employment, healthcare and essential services further compound their vulnerability.
Displacement often brings profound emotional hardship, severing connections with loved ones and familiar communities. The loss of social ties can lead to deep feelings of loneliness and isolation, contributing to mental health challenges such as trauma and depression.
While Australian universities may offer general support programs for students, they often fall short of addressing the distinct needs of those from displaced backgrounds. The lack of tailored services is compounded by limited training for university staff and faculty. This can erode trust, deepen marginalisation, and negatively impact the academic success and wellbeing of displaced students. In response to these gaps, JEINA was founded in 2024.
JEINA recognises that individuals may be displaced from their homelands for a variety of reasons. We're committed to listening to and learning from women with lived experience to identify unmet needs and foster a truly inclusive ecosystem.
