Talk to an Equitable Learning Facilitator about setting up an Equitable Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Plan with suitable reasonable adjustments to help you perform to your potential.听

What is Work Integrated Learning?

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) enables you to work with industry and community partners while earning UOC towards your program. You can apply what you've learnt in class, develop your skills and gain hands-on experience in your field of study. Examples include placements, clinical placements, practicums, industry projects and field placements.听

Work Integrated Learning & Equitable Learning Services

WIL provides an opportunity for students with disabilities or neurodiversity to grow their skills, gain practical experience and build professional networks. It also helps employers become more inclusive and better equipped to support employees with diverse abilities.听

Your support needs for WIL opportunities may be different to the support you require in the classroom. If you're required to participate in WIL, ELS can create an Equitable Work Integrated Learning Plan for you with suitable WIL adjustments, in collaboration with the WIL team.听

Eligibility

You are eligible for Equitable Learning Support if your studies are impacted by one or more of the following:

  • Neurodivergence
  • Living with a physical or mental health condition or disability
  • The effects of trauma or distress (including from intimate partner violence, family violence or abuse)
  • Being a primary carer for someone with support needs or disability.

You may require long or short-term assistance with any of the above. If we are not the best support for you, one of our staff will let you know who else you can contact.听

If you're unsure whether you're eligible for ELS, email us at聽els@unsw.edu.au.

  • An Equitable Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Plan is a document that recommends adjustments for your placement based on the impacts of your condition(s).听

It's similar to an Equitable Learning Plan (ELP)聽but is tailored to your WIL placement setting. The adjustments aim to reduce or eliminate barriers that can be reasonably altered in the workplace setting.听

    Equitable WIL adjustments

The adjustments in your Equitable WIL Plan are determined by an Equitable Learning Facilitator through an assessment process based on:

    1. Your documentation and recommendations from your health care professionals
    2. Discussions with you
    3. Consultation and negotiation with the Faculty WIL practitioner(s) to ensure the adjustments allow you to meet the requirements of your WIL placement.
Examples of reasonable adjustments for WIL placements include:
    • Location of the placement (e.g. reduced travel time)
    • Rest breaks and access to quiet or private spaces
    • Flexible working arrangements where possible (e.g. reduced hours, part-time)
    • Additional supports such as more regular supervisor feedback and extra communication supports (e.g. verbal and written instructions and resources)
    • Workspace set-up (e.g. specialised software or ergonomic furniture)
    • Accessibility (e.g. wheelchair-accessible premises).
    Important note:

Your Equitable WIL Plan will not disclose the nature of your condition and the underlying reason for your adjustments will remain strictly confidential. The Equitable WIL Plan will only contain the adjustments for the University and host organisation to implement and is treated as a sensitive document. It will only be provided to relevant staff from your faculty and host organisation on a need-to-know basis, so they can implement your adjustments.听

  • It is important to register with ELS at least one term before your placement commences. This will give your Faculty WIL practitioners and your host organisation enough time to prepare and ensure the workplace can accommodate your needs.

    To register with ELS:

Complete the online registration form below and someone will be in touch to make an appointment to discuss your needs and suitable adjustments.听

If you have questions or concerns, access the ELS daily drop in service to speak with an Equitable Learning Facilitator.听

If you have already registered with ELS:

Make an appointment through the ELS Student Portal below to discuss any WIL adjustments you may need.听

  • As soon as you receive your Equitable WIL Plan, you should email it to your faculty's WIL team聽and upload it to InPlace. This means they will have a copy of your Equitable WIL Plan and will be aware you are an ELS student requiring adjustments.听

Please contact your faculty WIL practitioner(s) to discuss your adjustments so they can confirm with the host organisation whether these can be reasonably accommodated. Once approved, they will check in with you early in your placement to confirm that your adjustments are in place.听

If your WIL placement is self-sourced and an organisation cannot reasonably accommodate certain adjustments, there are a number of 黑料网大事记 and external supports you can access. You can also explore other options and opportunities that might be better suited to you.听

  • If any concerns or issues arise with your adjustments while you are on placement, contact your faculty WIL team as soon as possible to receive assistance.听

If you would prefer to speak to your Equitable Learning Facilitator, book an appointment via the or access the ELS daily drop in.听

It is important to communicate any issues as soon as they occur while you're on placement so that timely assistance can be provided.听
